Description
Corso Italia is Genoa's seafront promenade: more than two kilometers of sidewalk overlooking the sea, from the Foce to the village of Boccadasse, lined with beach clubs, restaurants, swimming pools and bars. It's the Genoese's favorite stroll, for walking, running or watching the sunset in any season.
Along the way you pass the little Punta Vagno lighthouse, from 1931, the San Giuliano fort and the abbey of San Giuliano, recorded as early as 1282. Opposite stands out Villa Canali-Gaslini, in the Florentine Gothic style, designed by Gino Coppedè.
At the end, the church of Sant'Antonio, with model ships hung as votive offerings, and the way down to Boccadasse.
Before the Corso, this was all cliffs, convents, fields and vineyards. In the 1950s the boardwalk of the Lido d'Albaro hosted the heats of Miss Italia: among the Miss Lido winners was Sophia Loren.
