Description
This Genoa old town walking tour takes you through the caruggi, the narrow lanes of what is said to be the widest historic centre in Europe. A live guide explains the streets and the aristocratic palaces that line them, the Palazzi dei Rolli, a UNESCO site built in the 16th and 17th centuries.
The walk takes in the main sights of the centre:
- San Lorenzo Cathedral, a Gothic church with many religious objects
- Palazzo Ducale and the Opera House
- Piazza San Matteo, linked to the powerful Doria family
- Strada Nuova (Via Garibaldi), also UNESCO-listed
When the walk ends, the guide introduces the Strada Nuova Museums, and you go in on your own. Your ticket also covers the Sant'Agostino Museum, set in a triangular cloister and the largest surviving Gothic church. Use both on the same day as the tour.
The guide is bilingual and speaks Italian first, then English. A red or orange weather alert can stop the tour, and in extreme heat the route may be changed.
