Description
The Nervi Parks are nine hectares of lawns, avenues and exotic trees between the Via Aurelia and the sea, at the far eastern end of Genoa: the gardens of four old private villas, now a single public park with four museums.
More than a hundred species grow here, from palms to Aleppo pines, with five monumental trees, including a Chilean palm and a camphor tree. The park of Villa Grimaldi Fassio has a large rose garden; the villas house the Gallery of Modern Art, the Frugone Collections and the Luxoro Museum, and right next door is the Wolfsoniana.
The hills behind Nervi keep the climate mild, and the parks are busy even in winter. The real masters of the house are the American gray squirrels, introduced in 1966 with five pairs and now in the hundreds: they take peanuts from visitors' hands, but they threaten the European red squirrel.
Villa Gropallo was home to Gabriele D'Annunzio and Eleonora Duse.
