Description

A potato gnocchi and pesto class in Genoa's historic centre: shape the gnocchi by hand, pound the sauce in a marble mortar, then sit down to brunch with two Ligurian wines.

This potato gnocchi and pesto class in Genoa takes place inside a Ligurian food shop in the historic centre, right by Christopher Columbus' House, with Porta Soprana and Piazza Sarzano close by. A metro station about 50 metres away makes it easy to reach.

This is a working shop for the goods of small and medium Ligurian producers, not a classroom. The host, Barbara, talks about the people behind them, over 120 firms, from wineries and dairies to bee farms, bakers of sweets and pesto makers. You begin with the gnocchi, working the dough and shaping each piece by hand. Then comes the pesto, pounded the traditional way with a marble mortar and a wooden pestle from basil, olive oil, pine nuts and cheese.

  • Hands-on gnocchi and pesto, with all tools and ingredients supplied
  • Brunch of the gnocchi you made, dressed with your own pesto
  • Tasting of 2 wines from small Ligurian producers, plus water
  • A certificate of participation and, to take home, either Taggiasca olives or a Ligurian walnut sauce

The class lasts about three and a half hours. It is not suitable for children under 12, and it helps to mention food allergies when you book.
